Murdered man found in Lenawee County cornfield

RIGA TWP., Mich. (FOX 2) - Dispatchers got the call Monday evening - a woman had just got home from work when she noticed something in a cornfield.

She went to get a closer look only to learn it was a man's body.

"She said that she was so upset she couldn't hardly talk," said neighbor Jeannie Landry 

Neighbors like Landry can hardly wrap their heads around the big news rocking their small town.

Michigan State Police say the body of an African-American man in his early-to-mid 30s was discovered on Lipp Highway about a half mile north of the Ohio border in Lenawee County's Riga Township.

And based on evidence found there, it was clear the man was murdered.

"You just wonder what, where he's from, who he is, and what the circumstances are," said neighbor Jeff Holtz.

Investigators are trying to figure that out.  No arrests have been made.

And although state police know who the man is, they are not yet revealing his identity. The county medical examiner conducted an autopsy Tuesday but the results are pending.

Murders are rare in Riga Township which has a population of about 1,400 people - and they are trying to make sense of what happened.

"We don't ever really hear anything going on around here," neighbor Briana Urbaniak said. "That's why we thought it was safe for my parents to move out here."
