Neighborhood loses phone, Wi-Fi after thieves steal cables

DETROIT - People in one Detroit neighborhood have no internet or phone service, but it isn't due to a power outage.

Thieves stole the phone line cables overnight leaving some AT&T customers with service and Wi-Fi out of service.

"I noticed in the morning once I woke up, the phone line it read in the monitor that the line is not working," said resident Davell Robinson.

"I can't use anything," said resident Loren White. "I am not getting any service, can't use any Wi-Fi."

The cables were cut and stolen near Cathedral and Vaughn - and White says this is not the first time this has happened.

"All the time, I think somebody is trying to get some money," said White.

People who are cutting and stealing these cables want the copper cable inside.

"It's a big piece of hardware," Robinson said. "There's copper in there, and that's what they got - but they put everyone's service out."

An AT&T spokesperson tells Fox 2:

"We are working to repair the damage as quickly as possible. Vandalism is a serious matter that affects public safety and the community at large. We are cooperating with local law enforcement on an investigation of the matter. We apologize for this inconvenience."

"I just wish it could stop so we could quit being interrupted," White said.
