Rape kit from 2008 finally tested, suspect charged

After sitting at a Detroit Police Department warehouse for years, a rape kit has finally been tested from 2008. Now, officials say they have their man.

A Metro Detroit woman was raped in 2008 and was one of 10,000 that went untested for years. The then 18-year-old was knocked unconscious and sexually assaulted at a Southfield home. She was then forced by her attacker to walk home but she immediately reported it to Hamtramck police.

She couldn't remember the address of where the attack happened and the case fell into the Detroit Police Department storage facility where it sat until 2009, when thousands of untested kits were discovered.

The kits were finally tested and last month, Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said the testing on all the kits had been completed.

On Thursday, Attorney General Bill Schuette announced charges against 48-year-old Alan Broadnax, of Detroit, for the 2008 crime. He was arraigned Thursday on one count of first degree criminal sexual conduct

Schuette says Broadnax is a repeat offender and is recommending he be sentenced to a minimum of 25 years in prison.
