Salmonella warning for pre-cut melons bought at Kroger, Walmart

If you recently bought some pre-cut melons, you'll want to throw them out depending where they were bought.

Several health agencies are warning customers of Kroger and Walmart about pre-cut melons that were sold being infected with Salmonella in the Midwest.

No deaths have been reported but 32 of the 60 cases of people falling ill have happened in Michigan. Indiana has had 11 sickened, while Missouri has had 10, Ohio has had one case and Illinois six.

Pre-cut melons have been removed from the shelves in both store chains, while whole melons do not appear to be affected.

The Salmonella has been linked to the pre-cut cantaloupe, watermelon or fruit salad containing melon purchased at either Walmart or Kroger stores, including Jay C and Payless stores.

U.S. Food and Drug Administration officials are working alongside the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to identify the precise source of the outbreak.

The illnesses were first reported on April 30, and the last documented case was on May 28.

People infected with Salmonella develop diarrhea, fever, and cramps within 12 to 72 hours of being exposed to the bacteria, and the illness usually lasts four to seven days.
