Volunteers help clean the graves of veterans and place flags in their honor

Memorial Day, a time to remember those who served, those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. 

In Royal Oak, volunteers of all ages help clean veteran's grave at Oakview Cemetery, placing American flags on graves of veterans. 

"People gave up their lives in the line of duty for this country so they can live their lives the way they see fit," Ed Burkhardt said.

Organizer Carol Hennessey has been doing this for over 20 years.

"My goal was to get our youth involved so they would know what this is all about so they would continue this tradition," Hennessey said.

The younger kids who helped learn what Memorial Day is about. 

"Memorial Day means to celebrate those who fought for our freedom and fought for our country," 13-year old Zoe Chase said.

"It means that we should put these flags on them so we can support their duty so we can say thank you to them," 8-year old Alex Nelson said.
