DETROIT (FOX 2) - Heavy hearts at a ceremony for first responders in Detroit who went above and beyond the call of duty.
Among them, four who paid the ultimate price including police officer Darren Weathers killed in a crash earlier this year. And Thursday night at the Above and Beyond awards he and other first responders were honored for the difficult work they do.
"She asks if we can go to heaven and make sure daddy is okay," said Keisha Dewitt. "It hits you, there's nothing I can do or say."
Little Nyla will never get to see her daddy again on this earth, but she can be assured his community will always remember his life of service.
"He will never be forgotten, never," Dewitt said.

And months later with support, she is staying strong
"It's been challenging life-wise because you don't have that person there when you want to ask questions or lay down with," she said.
Weathers was killed in February in a squad car crash traveling for a training exercise
Months earlier Weathers appeared in a video that went viral showing his spirit and love for the community - especially the young.
