Clinton Township animal rescue 'on verge of closure' to to dire money shortfall

FOX 2 - A Macomb County animal rescue group is facing a dire financial situation it says, due to some recent critical cases and the ongoing demands of the nonprofit.

The backstory:

A ReJoyceful Animal Rescue put out the call for donation help on social media, saying unless it gets immediate help, it will be forced to close. 

"We simply cannot keep taking in critical cases when our medical bills are mounting, donations are not keeping up," said a post on Facebook. "And we are now dipping into the funds that are supposed to keep the lights on, the doors open, food in bowls, and a roof over the heads of the animals already depending on us just to pay emergency veterinary bills."

The nonprofit 501c3 which cares for about 300 animals at a time, many with foster families, has previously dealt with other hurdles including a devastating flood from a broken pipe at the shelter in summer of 2025.

In the statement, the shelter mentioned three recent cost-intensive rescue cases:

Panda: An abused dog that suffered severe neck injuries from a shock collar. After a year of dedicated help in recovery, the dog ingested a sock causing an obstruction and needs emergency surgery costing between $8,000 and $11,000.

Zosmie: A kitten found outside in the pouring rain neglected and in critical condition that needed emergency care. 

An unnamed black cat: Found with severe open flesh wounds across his back, he needs emergency help. 

The no-kill rescue said it does not want to make life-or-death decisions based on money. 

"There may come a point when we have no other choice," it said in an email. "When the emergency account is empty and the operating account is being used to pay veterinary hospitals, there isn't another magical pot of money somewhere. Eventually, there is simply nothing left."
