We all sweat, but for some people, the sweating is excessive and seems to happen for no particular reason.

It's a condition called hyperhydrosis -- and now the FDA has approved a new treatment in the form of a towelette. Dr. Steve Grekin joined us on The Nine to tell us more about the treatment. You can hear from him in the video player above.

"People who say, 'I can't get dressed; I can't go out; I can't dance, I can't go to work,' etc. etc. what winds up happening is it becomes too much," he says.

There are a variety of treatments for hyperhyrosis, including antiperspirants, oral medications, Botox injections and now this new cloth called Qbrexa.

"The company made it in a topical, put it on a a wipe like a moist towelette," explains Dr. Grekin. "So the medication is stimulating nerve ending at the opening of the sweat gland and it makes them close. It's as simple as that. It's almost a mechanical effect."

As an oral medication, Qbrexa led to some unpleasant side effects. But in cloth form in studies, it's better tolerated.

"You use this medication every day. People start to see results, or reported in their diaries, excellent results at four weeks," Dr. Grekin says.

Qbrexa is approved for underarm use, but Dr. Grekin says that doesn't mean it won't work on hands or feet.

He's also involved in a study involving a topical gel that acts in a similar way. If you'd like to get involved in that medical trial, call 586-759-5525 for more information.
