LINCOLN PARK, Mich. (WJBK) - A police chase ended in a deadly crash Monday night in Lincoln Park.
Police say they attempted to pull over a vehicle in Wyandotte, but the driver accelerated, blew a stop sign and took off. Police began to follow and the suspect led them on a chase a few miles north to Lincoln Park. We're told the chase reached speeds of up to 80 mph.
We're told the driver eventually lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a restaurant sign. The car flipped over after the crash and caught on fire. We're told the person in the passenger seat was ejected from the vehicle and was killed.
The suspect, who Wyandotte Police Chief Daniel Grant has identified as 33-year-old Eric Turnipseed, was taken into custody by police. Police say Turnipseed was resisting arrest after the crash so they had to use a stun gun to subdue him.
The crash happened outside Dix Coney Island on Fort Street near Champaign Road around 8:30 p.m. Monday.
"The cops ran up and started busting out all the [car] windows and started yelling at the guy inside to get out," says Robert Gabriel, who witnessed the crash.
Chief Grant says Turnipseed was driving without a license, and that they believe he was also driving under the influence. Police say Turnipseed eventually admitted that he smokes crack cocaine, and that he had been drinking alcohol earlier in the day.
Chief Grant says Turnipseed was driving his friend's car, who was in the passenger's seat and killed in the crash.
Turnipseed is expected to be arraigned on multiple charges later this week.
