Detroit Police Chief James Craig says the mom of a two-year-old boy is in custody after the child died at the family's home Friday morning.
Detroit Police were called to the home in the 5000 block of Sobieski Street after the two-year-old boy was found unresponsive. According to police, the boy was pronounced dead after they arrived at the home and the child's mother was taken into custody.
According to a neighbor, the boy's mom took good care of the child and was shocked by the news.
"She is a really, really good person and she loved her son very much," the neighbor told FOX 2's Robin Murdoch.
The neighbor asked not to be identified. She said she's having a hard time understanding what may have happened behind the curtains of the home. She said he was a happy boy who was always playing and running around, she said.
"I cant believe how it was possible he was really good nothing wrong what happened suddenly," she said.
The boy's father was at work when he got the call: the boy's mom claimed something was wrong with the toddler. He rushed home and called 911 but it was too late; he was pronounced dead at Children's Hospital and his 26-year-old mom was arrested.
"[The] preliminary examination by treating doctor that there was some force resulting in the death of the child," Chief Craig said.
It's a death that has those living next door to the crime scene stunned, saddened, and so confused.This little boy whose smile and energy was contagious is gone and the person who cared for him, who neighbors say they never saw mistreat him, is in police custody. To them, something just doesn't add up.
"She loves him more than her life even the dad they were a very happy family," the neighbor said.
An autopsy will be conducted to confirm the exact cause of death. That information will then be compiled in a report and sent to the prosecutors office to determine what if any charges will be filed. we'll stay on top.
