Police are looking for suspects in the shooting of an off-duty Highland Park officer overnight.

Robert Ball, 58, is recovering from surgery at St. John Hospital after being shot at a block party on the city's east side.

The incident happened while Ball was off duty around 2 a.m. between 7 Mile and State Fair.

Sources say it appeared to be a random drive-by shooting.

Ball was rushed to the hospital where he immediately went into surgery.

"Foolish behavior once again, shooting into a crowd and he was struck," said Detroit Police Chief James Craig. "It appears he is going to recover, but he wasn't targeted because he is a police officer."

At this time there are no suspects in custody.

Those with any information should call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAKUP.
