DETROIT (FOX 2) - "I'm not giving up. Justice for Justin; that's my motto. I'm still standing, and I've got work to do. Until this case is solved, I've got work to do."
The mother of Justin Williams still cannot believe this is her story. Nearly six years has gone by and it still doesn't feel real that her son is gone.
"My children weren't raised for this to be my story," Constance Williams-Spann says. "But because it is my story, all of these people are out there, a lot of people saw something, and yet no one speaks up. I don't understand it. It's inhumane to me."
The 24-year-old went to Diack Park on Detroit's west side on the 4th of July to enjoy the fireworks.
"He was with my daughter, his sister. Their grandparents live around the block so he was actually supposed to work overtime that day."
At some point during that night in 2013, gunfire erupted in the large crowd. Justin was struck and died from his injuries.
"He was a good person. A man of few words, a gentle giant. He was like 6'3", 240 pounds. So he was a big guy but he was a gentle giant," she says. "It sounds cliché' coming from me, because I'm his mom, but he was everything I needed him to be. God gave me what I needed in a son."
Family and friends hold a vigil every year at the park on the 4th of July in Justin's memory.
Constance believes her son wasn't the intended target.
"For over 150, 200 people to be at an event and someone ends up murdered? And you say nothing? The opportunity to remain anonymous, that doesn't inspire you to do anything? What kind of people are you? It's bewildering."
A $2,500 reward is being offered for information that leads to an arrest in this case.
