Men accused of killing local rapper appear in court
DETROIT - Entering together, the suspects, 31-year-old Dietrick Odums and 47-year-old Otis Davis faced a courtroom overcrowded with friends and family of rapper Dex Osama. The two are accused of killing him together.Rapper Dex Osama's stripper girlfriend, Chantell Sturdivant, recalls the night Dex was killed, after he told her, she wasn't allowed to give a mutual friend a lap dance.
"A young lady tapped me and said, Jeff wants you to dance for him. As I went to the booth to dance, I looked at Byron and he gave me a signal, like waving his hands telling me no, I couldn't dance with him," testified Sturdivant.
That's when she says, Dex poured champagne on her head, and told her to get dressed. That's when she heard gunfire.
"I just heard a shot, everybody was running to the back, out the doors," said Sturdivant. "I was just, just had champagne on me, so I ran to the back to the dressing room to put on my clothes."
Legally named Byron Cox, the 21-year-old rapper was on his way to success, recently signing with Meek Mill.
He was shot and killed September 7th outside of the Crazy Horse Strip club in Detroit.
Another witness, Timothy Patterson was not so compliant in front of the judge, and a room full of family members - despite giving more information to police in previous statements.
"I was out of it. I was off drugs and alcohol. I was out of if so I can't recall," said Patterson. "I didn't see anybody with a gun."
Odums is facing an assault with intent to murder charge and Davis is charged with open murder. Both are being held without bond.
This is just the first day of the preliminary exam for these two suspects. We will hear from more witnesses when this resumes on October 30th.
