DETROIT (WJBK) - Detroit police say a man has been arrested after his wife was found beaten and shot in a pick up trick in an abandoned field on Detroit's east side Wednesday afternoon.
Detroit police tell FOX 2 an undercover officer was riding around in the neighborhood when he saw a 2007 Chevy Silverado parked in the middle of the field. That's when the officer says a man inside the truck waved to him, saying he ran out of gas.
The undercover officer says the man then said he was a fugitive apprehension officer and produced a fake badge. The officer did not believe him and looked into the vehicle, where he says he saw a woman who had been beaten and shot in each leg.
Police say the husband was arrested immediately, and that they believe the undercover officer happened to arrive at the scene just in time to save her life.
The abandoned field where this happened is at Gilbo and Lyford avenues, which is near the Coleman A. Young International Airport.
The terrible scene in the open field could have been even worse if it weren't for that undercover officer from Grosse Pointe Park. He just happened drive by and spotted the truck that neighbors say had been there all day.
"I noticed it when I pulled out around 10 o'clock," one neighbor said.
Police on scene say the two live in Hazel Park, and believe the husband planned to kill her and dump her body. DPD lieutenant Ron Lockhart said the big open field would have been an ideal location for a heinous act.
"As you can see, there's nothing in this area," Lockhart said.
Some neighbors say for that reason, this is an ideal spot for someone to attempt violent crimes and say police need more protection in the area.
Police say charges are pending. Identities of the woman and man have not been released.
