They're everyday people who found themselves in extreme situations. Their instincts told them that they had to help, and today -- the City of Warren honored them for their heroism.

Kristin Tozer was one of nine people honored on this day. Some rescued a suicidal teen from an overpass, others performed CPR or pulled someone from a burning car, still others helped police catch several criminals. Kristin rescued a baby.

"We didn't tell anybody because it was an emotional thing," she said.

In May, Tozer discovered a 5-month-old baby left locked in a hot car when she and her daughter stopped at Oakridge Market at 13 Mile and Hoover.

"We usually go into a different store but we decided to go into that one that day and then we came out, we were loading the stuff into the car and we kept hearing a baby cry," she said.

Soon they found the child locked in the car in her car seat with the sun beating down on her. A relative had forgotten the baby was in there and was inside shopping.

"She was like screaming and crying and my daughter was trying to block the sun from beating on her," Tozer said.

Tozer tried to pull the window down, then broke it and was able to get to the baby, who was flushed and fainting and hot to the touch.

"Got the baby out, just started pouring water on her, took her into the air conditioned store," she said. "It was just meant to be."

These unsung heroes didn't ask for the recognition. Many didn't even want it, but it certainly is well deserved.

"What a great world it would be if everybody followed the actions of these individuals today and chose to act first on the needs of others, not on their own needs," said Mayor Jim Fouts.
