Tigers trade J.D. Martinez to Diamondbacks

The Detroit Tigers announced Tuesday afternoon they have traded outfielder J.D. Martinez to the Arizona Diamondbacks for prospects.

Martinez, 29, is in the final season of a two-year, 18.5 million dollar contract.  The seven-year veteran is hitting .305 in 57 games this season with 16 home runs, 39 RBI and an on-base percentage of .388. 

The Tigers will receive infield prospects Dawel Lugo, Sergio Alcantara & Jose King from the Diamondbacks.  

Lugo, 22, is ranked by Baseball America as the Diamondbacks #2 prospect and is hitting .282 with seven home runs & 43 RBI for AA-Jacksonville.  

Alacantara, 21, is in A-Visalia and hitting .279 with three home runs and 28 RBI.  The switch-hitter also has 11 stolen bases.

King, 18, is a rookie-level shortstop and batting .261 with 9 RBI.

The Tigers are currently six games behind the American League Central leading Cleveland Indians and expect more moves to be made before the July 31st trade deadline.
