A 2-year-old boy was seriously hurt Monday evening after finding a gun and shooting himself.

According to police, the incident happened in the 12000 block of Laing on Detroit's eastside.

The father states the child found his 9mm weapon hidden under a pillow. The bullet went through the child’s stomach and buttocks.

The child was initially listed in critical condition but we're told his condition has since improved.

"It's a tragedy. It comes back to an unsecured weapon, whether this is a concealed pistol license holder but we have children, we have to be more diligent keeping our weapons away from children," Detroit Police Commander Eric Decker said. "Very unfortunate accident. The good news is this child is out of surgery and upgraded to stable."

The child’s parents are cooperating with the investigation. It's unclear right now if they'll face any charges.
