Bill Schuette announces running mate Lisa Posthumus Lyons

Republican Bill Schuette has chosen his running mate, Kent County Clerk Lisa Posthumus Lyons. She is the daughter of former Lt. Gov. Dick Posthumous.

Her selection is a bit surprising, FOX 2 political guru Tim Skubick explains, because she has strongly denounced Donald Trump and his conduct, saying, "He hasn't earned my respect or my vote." Schuette, of course, has fully embraced the president.

"Her leadership on education will help us grow with a better-trained workforce. Lisa is a rising star, dedicated to making Michigan a better place, and an amazing wife and mother," Schuette's tweet read after the announcement.

He'll be making several stops across the state Wednesday, including stops in Lansing and Bloomfield Hills. His first stop, though, was at 9 a.m. at the Kent County GOP Headquarters in Grand Rapids to make the announcement.

Schuette beat out three other candidates earlier this month in the bid for the GOP gubernatorial candidate. The attorney general beat Lt. Gov. Brian Calley, state Sen. Patrick Colbeck and Dr. Jim Hines on Tuesday. Democrats running were former legislative leader Gretchen Whitmer, ex-Detroit health director Abdul El-Sayed and entrepreneur Shri Thanedar.

Schuette and Whitmer will square off on the ballot come November 6.
