A 15-year-old student athlete was remembered Monday night after drowning last weekend in Cass Lake.

Coaches, teachers, classmates and family honored Mohammad Wutwut who tragically lost his life. The vigil was held at the Dearborn Heights Star International Academy, where he went to school.

He was swimming with friends in Cass Lake Saturday when he drowned. He was a rising star on the football team and a young leader.

"He was the first person in the weight room, the last person to leave the field," said Nicholas Margo, his football coach. "He was the last person to look down on his teammates or anyone trying to get better. That is what he was about."

"He was very special, very caring," said Nawal Hamadeh, superintendent and CEO of Star International Academy. "A great student with good character. He used to really motivate and lead his team members and classmates as well."

There will be a scrimmage Tuesday in Mohammad's honor and grief counselors will be made available at the school throughout the summer and the fall.
