An elderly driver was rescued Monday after he somehow drove his car into Lake St. Clair.

It happened along Lake Shore Road near Winthrop Place in Grosse Pointe Farms, which is near the Crescent Sail Yacht Club.

When police arrived, two people were already working to free the driver from his silver Cadillac in the lake.

Officers jumped into the water, knocked out the car's window and were able to help with the rescue.

"We were successfully able to smash out the front window," said Lt. Andrew Rogers, Grosse Pointe Farms police. "We cut the seatbelt off and was able to extract the driver. There was some problem getting the driver out, his legs were entangled  in the mechanism of the car, the steering wheel.

"We were able to get him out. Right when we got him out, the car went under."

We're told the driver had regained some consciousness before he was taken to the hospital.

Police weren't sure of his condition.
