Driver in fatal car wash accident: 'The truck just took off'

A truck hit two people, killing one at a Troy car wash Monday afternoon.

Responding Troy police officers said that when the vehicle approached an area where employees were standing, it accelerated and pinned one worker against the wall with another coworker bouncing off the vehicle.

Afterwards, officers administered a field sobriety test to the driver, a 64-year-old man from Rochester.

"It was just an accident, the car just took off," said Nick. "I put it in gear and the car just took off."

In a statement sent by Jax Kar Wash, they said they would "miss the employee terribly."

Despite the oddity of the event, police said alcohol was not a factor.

"The driver has been very cooperative," said Sgt. Meghan Lehman, of the Troy Police Department. "There's no indication that there's any kind of alcohol or substance use or even distracted driving at this point."
