Drug overdose leads to driver passing out, crashing on Southfield Freeway
SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (FOX 2) - A driver hit another vehicle and a guardrail along the side of the Southfield Freeway after passing out behind the wheel Wednesday night.
Michigan State Police said that driver experienced an opioid overdose that led to them passing out, losing control, and rear-ending another vehicle on the northbound side of the freeway near Nine Mile in Southfield around 10:20 p.m. The driver then hit the guardrail.
The driver who caused the crash is currently listed in critical condition, according to MSP. No one else was hurt.
"After interviewing the passenger of the at-fault vehicle, it was determined that the driver had passed out due to an opioid overdose and then lost control of the car. He is currently being treated for that overdose at a local hospital," said MSP F/Lt. Mike Shaw.
