Woman missing after Backpage.com date found dead

Family and Detroit police have identified the body of a woman who was found stabbed to death in a Detroit alley as Cynthia Worthy.

The 23-year-old had been missing since Friday night after meeting someone through Backpage.com.

Worthy's body was later found in an alley off of Davison Street, near Dexter Avenue on the city's west side.

Cynthia would find work on the known escort website, where she went by the name "Lady." Her family was aware of her choice and says she was working to get away from that lifestyle.

"We finally convinced her to stop and she enrolled in school and has been on track," said Shawn Willis, her father. "She told me she is about to stop, 'I can't do this anymore.'"

Worthy and her car had gone missing. Her sister works for OnStar, and so her family was able to track the vehicle to Oak Park.

"She was always very sweet," said a neighbor.

Police believe it is scary that a killer remains at large possibly looking for victims on Backpage.com.

"We are looking at a number of contacts, not just that one," said Police Chief James Craig. "We are aggressively looking at all avenues for that investigation."

Craig warns against meeting people on websites like Backpage.com.

"It's dangerous," he said. "Anytime you engage in high-risk behavior, you are at risk."

Police are looking for the public's help. Anyone with information should contact Detroit police at (313) 596-5300 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.
