New Shirley Woodson exhibit at the Detroit Institute of Arts
Shirley Woodson is a figurative painter, tireless arts educator and advocate of African American artists. Her career spans six decades. Shirley Woodson: Shield of the Nile Reflections, which opened December 18 and runs through June, is another crowning achievement for Woodson, a local legend who received the 2021 Kresge Eminent Artist award for “devoting decades to broadening education and exhibition opportunities for generations of African American artists, and for championing art as an essential lens into Detroit’s history and culture.
