Building your toolkit with Jill of All Trades

(FOX 2) - This week, our Jill of All Trades, Jill Washburn, shows us tool box staples for do-it-yourselfers who are just getting started, or for people who are trying to build their basic tool set.  

Jill says you’ve got to start with a basic set of screwdrivers and a hammer. Those will cover your most fundamental needs around the house. Next add a good tape measure and a small level. Those will help with tasks like hanging pictures, cabinets or artwork.  

One of Jill’s favorite tools is a 5-in-1 paint tool. Her friends have nicknamed it the “Jill Tool” because she uses it for so many things. It’s good for scraping surfaces, prying lids, cleaning paint rollers, etc. The pointed end can be used to mark wood or puncture things. The flat end can even be used as a screwdriver, in a pinch.

According to Jill, every tool box need some wrenches. You can buy a set, or pick up a couple of adjustable wrenches that can fit nearly any size nut/bolt.  

Jill’s newest tool is an adjustable wrench that adjusts with a squeeze trigger, rather than a thumb screw. It’s quicker and easier to use when you are elbows-deep into a project. Locking wrenches also come it really handy for all kinds of projects. They let you get a good grip on bolts that are stuck, etc.

Jill says that a small rechargeable power screwdriver is a must for any new homeowner or budding DIY-er. Their small size allows them to get into places that larger power tools cannot, they generally hold a charge for a long time, and you can even get drill bits for them that will let you drill the occasional hole for minor repairs, etc. A small-sized power screwdriver should run $20-$30 and is worth its weight in gold around the house. 

If you’re someone who needs to work on bikes, or cars or lawnmowers, etc., you’ll probably find a set of socket wrenches handy. Those are very affordable and they are many different sizes of sets available, so you can find what fits your needs.

Many of the big box retailers, as well as your local hardware store or lumber yard, have all kinds of deals on tools and tool gift sets available right now, so it is a good time to build your toolbox or get a gift for your favorite do-it-yourselfer.
