Corinne Martin also reminding pet owners about the dangers of heart worm disease. Since 2015 we have continued to see a dramatic rise in positive heart worm cases.  50% of the dogs over 25 pounds that come to the Grosse Pointe Shelter are positive. The disease is passed by mosquitoes and can easily be prevented with monthly heart worm prevention.  Dogs need a simple blood test by a veterinarian before taking the medication. This disease effects large and small dogs, short and long coat dogs.Any dog that goes outdoors for even a short period of time and may be bitten by a mosquito.  Dogs should be tested every year in April or May and begin the prevention then. Heartworm can be treated if it’s caught in early stages, but it is very expensive and hard on the dog.
