Purple Funk Gangsters Pay Tribute to Prince

The death of music legend Prince earlier this year took the world by surprise and put the spotlight back on the perils of prescription drug abuse.

A group of Prince fans and local musicians are paying tribute to the late artist while urging others to take a stand against drugs.

“We know there are a lot of kids getting involved with drugs and when they get depressed they need someone to talk to," said Darrell Strickland, of the Purple Funk Gangsters. "They feel the drugs are the way out, but there there's a better way out by talking to people."

The band visited the Fox2 Studios Sunday to preview an upcoming tribute performance Aug. 13 at the Charles H. Wright Museum. They honored Prince by playing "Purple Rain," one of the late artist's signature songs.
