House fire kills man, firefighter injured in floor collapse on Detroit west side

A late night house fire on McQuade Street took the life of the man living inside a home near Dexter and Elmhurst.

A man died after being pulled from a burning Detroit home late Tuesday, while a firefighter was injured in a floor collapse.

Firefighters responded to the home in the 10200 block of McQuade near Dexter just after 11:30 p.m. When they arrived, they saw flames coming from the home and entered the house.

A man found inside the house was taken to Henry Ford Hospital, where he died.

The McQuade Street house, which looks like a duplex, is a total loss. The resident, estimated to be in his 60s, died of smoke inhalation.

The fire began at 11:30 p.m. and the Detroit Fire Department arrived within four minutes and said that upon arriving, smoke was billowing out of the home.

The cause is still under investigation. The firefighter, who was hospitalized, is expected to recover.

"Whenever we witness or we have to rescue - in this case a live victim, then we hear later that they perished, then it takes a little more effect post incident," said DFD Deputy Chief Lorenzo Robertson. "We are emotional, we are human. We do our jobs to save, no matter the cost. That’s what firefighters sacrifice the most is, we’re going in and we’ll come out with everyone and try to save the victim if they’re in the house."

Officials said a firefighter also had to be transported to a hospital after falling from the second floor of the house into the basement and suffering a back injury.

That firefighter has been with DFD since 2019, has earned his paramedic license and has been fighting fires since 2023.

He is in the hospital this morning for a back injury but expected to make a full recovery.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
