12 injured after large fire at Boyne Highlands resort

A large fire ripped through the main lodge at Boyne Highlands Resort early Sunday morning.

Twelve people were injured according to a statement on the Boyne Highlands website, with one person transported to a hospital outside of the area.

The injuries suffered were from smoke inhalation, while others were injured jumping from windows, according to emergency alerts from the Charlevoix and Emmett Tri-county Office of Emergency Management. 

The blaze was contained to the main lodge only, according to the Harbor Springs Area Chamber of Commerce Facebook page.

The fire began sometime around 2 a.m., the cause has not been determined.

"The smoke was unbelievably thick," said witness Alex Childress, a local photographer who was there. "Even from my distance I was (when I watched the fire) I was coughing for hours after leaving."

First responders including the Harbor Springs Area Fire Department and EMS were at the scene managing the situation.
