A 3-year-old boy, who was shot in drive-by shooting while he sat in the back seat of a car on the Southfield Freeway, has died.

The young boy died Friday morning, less than 12 hours after he was shot in the backseat of the car. Michigan State Police Lt. Michael Shaw said the boy was hit between the shoulder blades and was fighting for his life Thursday night.

"I would probably say some prayers tonight," said Lt. Michael Shaw. "It is not looking very promising."

The shooting happened near Southfield and Plymouth Road at about 7:30 p.m. on the freeway when another vehicle pulled alongside them and fired a single shot. There has been no description of the suspect's vehicle at this time.

MSP originalloy said the boy's mother who was driving but later said his godmother was behind the wheel. After the shooting, she exited the freeway and parked her vehicle at the BP gas station on the corner of Joy and the Southfield service drive.

MSP said they're looking for a light-colored four-door car. The driver was described as a light skinned man with a full beard. No other information was released about the car or the shooter.

Authorities say the boy remained in critical condition early Friday after being revived at Sinai Grace Hospital. He was later transported to Children's Hospital where he died.

Shaw said it's unclear whether the vehicle was targeted. He said the incident does not appear to be related to road rage.
