6 people escape early morning house fire in Highland Park

A family of six is safe after escaping an early-morning house fire in Highland Park.

Three children and three adults were inside the home on Tuxedo Street when the fire started around 5:30 a.m. Tuesday.

One of the adults was up and noticed smoke and fire coming from the living room area. We're told he went to get some water but when he came back the whole couch was engulfed in flames.

"My son woke up first but, I don't know; I just woke up! I just woke up against the grace of God and I seen the couch was on fire (sic) and then he was trying to get my niece out of there, because she can't walk. He brought her out there and got the kids out of there," says Dortha Sykes.

We're told the niece has cerebral palsy and is in a wheelchair.

Everyone got out safely and no injuries were reported, but the home is a total loss.

Authorities are still on scene making sure the fire's completely out, and will be investigating the cause.
