The 7-year-old girl who was shot at the Taylor Sportsplex Thursday night has died, Taylor Police Chief Mary Sclabassi said in a news conference Friday afternoon.

The girl, now identified as Emma Watson Nowling, and her mother were shot in the head by a man who then died by a self-inflicted gunshot wound in the parking lot of the facility, which is on Telegraph near North Line. Her mother has been identified as Sharon Watson, 37. She is currently still in serious but stable condition.

Taylor Police Chief Mary Sclabassi has said the shooting is a murder-suicide. The man has been identified as 57-year-old Timothy Obeshaw from Taylor.

Emma and Sharon were at the complex for a routine soccer practice. Police say Obeshaw was seen at the practice and the three appeared to be friendly with each other. Witnesses say they have seen Obeshaw at Emma's practices and games before.

Police say Obeshaw confronted the two as they were leaving the practice around 8 p.m. A witness says Obeshaw fired shots into their car, hitting Emma first and then her mother.

Family members say Obeshaw was a family friend and had been staying with Watson and her boyfriend in Belleville, but that he had recently moved to a home in Taylor.

Police still do not have a motive for the shooting, except they say family members are saying Obeshaw had started becoming mentally unstable and paranoid in the past year and that he believed someone was trying to perform mind control on him.

In September 2015, Obeshaw registered the handgun in his name in Belleville.

Arrangements are currently being made for donations to Emma's family.
