Police investigation underway in Royal Oak

A large police response in Royal Oak is at the scene in the 3800 block of Crooks.

Royal Oak police say one man is dead after a shooting in the parking lot of an apartment near 13 Mile Road and Crooks on Thursday.

Police Chief Michael Moore spoke with the media on Thursday, almost four hours after the shooting in the parking lot of the apartment complex.

Man killed at Royal Oak apartments after argument

A man was shot and killed at an apartment complex in Royal Oak after an argument Thursday around noon.

What we know:

Moore said the shooting happened around noon and police and fire immediately responded to the scene and found one person dead from gunshot wounds and also took a suspect into custody.

"Quick actions of the police officers was key in keeping the community safe," Moore said.

The chief did not offer up many details, but said that there was "an altercation" between the suspect and victim in the parking lot.

"This was a targeted act. it appears several shots were fired," Moore said. "iI appears there was a relationship. this does not appear to be random at all."

What we don't know:

Moore did not identify the victim or the suspect. He also did not offer more information about a possible motive, saying that officers are still early in the investigation.
