Barge damaged after colliding with pier on Detroit River
DETROIT (AP) - A Canadian barge carrying steel coil has crashed into a concrete pier along the west Detroit riverfront.
The Detroit Free Press reports that the Friday morning crash was near the Nicholson Terminal & Dock Co.
The U.S. Coast Guard says operators of the barge's tug were unable to stop the barge from veering toward the pier. The tug tried to move in reverse, but it was too late to stop the collision.
The barge suffered a hole in its port side, above the waterline. None of the eight crew members were hurt. The pier was not damaged.
