Crowd protests Kid Rock opening Little Caesars Arena in Detroit
DETROIT (WJBK) - Little Caesars Arena is finally open, after years in the making, but it's not starting without controversy surrounding the rock star opening the new arena.
Kid Rock starts a 6-night stay at Little Caesars Arena to open the new venue but community activists say he's racist and putting him front and center sends the wrong message in Detroit.
The National Action Network announced plans to protest Kid Rock's opening night concert on Tuesday. The civil rights group last week called for their cancellation because of Kid Rock's past display of the Confederate flag during performances and his recent criticism of black former NFL player Colin Kaepernick for refusing to stand during the national anthem last year.
Kid Rock wrote, "None of this would be going on if I were not thinking of running for office." He has been encouraged to run for the U.S. Senate as a Republican.
