Congratulations going out tonight to a longtime Detroit elementary school teacher.

Fourth grade teacher Theresa McCants at Fisher magnet Lower Academy Detroit Public School has been named Goodfellows Teacher of the Year.

For the last seven years, the Detroit Goodfellows gives an award for the teacher of the year.

McCants has been teaching for 30 years, the last 10 here at Fisher Magnet Lower Academy.  And it's not easy to get the award. Students in grades 3rd through 8th must answer the question why is your teacher so special in 50 words or less.

One student said she reminds him of Rosa Parks "because she teaches her students to stand their ground and makes sure we never give up."

McCants was presented with a $200 gift card to buy classroom supplies. She will also be acknowledged at the Detroit Goodfellows Tribute breakfast in the fall.
