East side daytime drive-by kills 51-year-old woman

An east side Detroit drive-by shooting is being investigated as a hit.

A man and woman were talking to each other when the gunman pulled up and opened fire, hitting both of them. One of the victims, a 51-year-old woman, died from her injuries.

Investigators say she wasn't the intended target.

The shooting happened at Elmdale and Barrett just before 2:30 p.m. Thursday.

"They need to stop doing this," said the victim's cousin, who did not want to be identified. "They need to stop shooing innocent people. This is terrible."

Police say a 51-year old woman was standing outside on the street talking to a 38-year-old man who was sitting inside silver Chevrolet Equinox

"At that time a vehicle drove by and started firing shots," Sgt. Cassandra Lewis.

The female victim fell to the ground and died from her injuries. The shooting victim inside the Equinox drove after the gunman. Because of his injuries police say he only made it a short distance to Dickerson and Harper.

He was taken to a hospital and is listed in critical condition.

"We are canvassing the area talking to witnesses trying to ascertain as much information as possible," Lewis said.

Police need your help to find the gunman. Anyone with information should call Detroit police at (313) 596-5300 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.
