Ex-Michigan State employee gets probation for embezzlement

LANSING, Mich. (AP) — A former employee of Michigan State University's College of Osteopathic Medicine has been sentenced to five years of probation for embezzling more than $100,000 from the university.

The Lansing State Journal reports (http://on.lsj.com/1e0IS7U ) 39-year-old Brandi Moody of DeWitt Township also was ordered Wednesday to pay restitution. She'll have a six-month jail sentence suspended if she repays $43,000. She paid $100,000 in June, when she pleaded guilty to embezzling more than $100,000.

A second embezzlement charged was dropped.

Moody was suspended by the East Lansing university in August after the college looked into a surgery department deficit. Police say she spent more than $130,000 using a department-issued credit card in the three years prior, mostly for gift cards.

According to police, she also bought about $10,000 in computers and accessories.
