Explosion, fire reported at DTE facility in East China Township

An explosion and fire has been reported at a DTE facility in East China Township.

The incident happened in the early evening Thursday night at the facility at about 6:30 p.m. which is on M-29 near King in St. Clair County.

A DTE Energy spokesperson said that the cause is believed to be an electrical generation unit that caught fire. There are no known injuries and employees were evacuated immediately. St Clair and Marine City first responders  are currently working to contain the fire. 

The Detroit Fire Department boat has  also been called in to help fight the fire. Roads in the area have been shut down by police.

In images from SkyFOX, multiple hot spots across the large complex provided a challenge to firefighters.

Viewer Stephanie Lee told FOX 2 that the smoke could be seen from about 3 miles away. She said her father was home at the time and heard the explosion at 6:30 p.m.

Another FOX 2 viewer who called from the Canadian side, said that he heard more than one explosion.
