Family Dollar security guard chases down, tackles armed robber
DETROIT (WJBK) - A Family Dollar security guard in Detroit is being called a hero for saving employees and customers from a robber holding them at gunpoint - then going the extra mile to make sure that robber would be locked up.
The incident took place around 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at the store on Southfield and Tireman. Police say a man armed with a handgun walked into the store and demanded money as he held several people at gunpoint.
A security guard inside witnessed the robbery and quickly stepped in, chasing the robber outside. He was also armed, and sources say he fired two shots at the suspect. The robber wasn't hit and ran through an alley near Archdale Street.
That security guard didn't stop there. He then jumped into his car and followed the suspect as he ran through backyards of abandoned homes. Three blocks later, the security guard finally caught up with him and tackled the robber to the ground.
The guard held him to the ground near Diversey and Rutland and police arrived minutes later to arrest the robber. The guard was not injured.
Police say the robber tossed his gun during the chase and with Dearborn police and K-9 units assisting; they recovered the gun and $85.
The suspect was out on bond for kidnapping and felonious assault.
