FedEx driver caught drunk driving in Troy with cooler inside truck

A FedEx driver accused of being drunk on the job pulled over in his work truck with his blood alcohol level more than twice the legal limit.

Michael Lee Cunningham of Grand Blanc was arrested by Troy police for drinking and driving while on his way to make a commercial delivery.

It was Cunningham's alleged erratic driving on southbound I-75 near Big Beaver at 5:30 p.m. on black Friday that first caught the attention of other drivers.

"In this case there were at least two calls that stayed on the line were following the driver," Lt. Josh Jones, Troy police said. "They were describing how poorly he was driving and witnessed him striking the center median."

Police were able to catch up with Cunningham, 48, after he got off the freeway a few miles away at 14 Mile and Dequindre. The FedEx driver blew a .21 when police initially stopped him. Keep in mind .08 is legally impaired.

"There was a cooler on the floor," Jones said. "There's also the officer immediately noticed a red bottle cap on the floor that they thought was from a liquor bottle. As soon as they looked at the cooler next to the seat, it actually had two vodka bottles in there that were both open.

FOX 2 reached out to FedEx for a comment about what happened but we have yet to hear back. Meanwhile police are just glad that other drivers on the road called 911.

"It's very concerning we have a big large vehicle that weighs a lot," Jones said. "If it strikes any passenger vehicle, a truck, whatever, it's going to cause a lot of damage and definitely potential injury."
