Hero Detroit Cop who saved pregnant woman, saves someone else

A Detroit Police Officer, who was part of a daring water rescue in April to save a pregnant woman from the Detroit River, helped a choking woman Thursday in Dearborn.

Officer Brian Gadwell was at Bar Louie in Dearborn, grabbing a bite to eat when he saw a woman choking.
He rushed over to help her, performed abdominal thrusts or the Heimlich maneuver on the patron and afterward she gave him a big hug.

A bartender who witnessed the incident says it was frightening to behold, but he was happy that the officer was standing there and ready to go.

In mid-April, Gadwell along with another officer and a mail barge captain pulled Ethel, a 20-year-old pregnant woman from the area of the river near West Grand Blvd and Riverside Park, behind the post office. The woman and her baby were treated for hypothermia, but Gadwell says so was he.

He didn’t even give a second thought to jumping in and saving the woman, forgetting his own safety.

At the hospital, doctors had to perform an emergency C-section. The baby and mom pulled through just fine in the end, all thanks to Officer Gadwell!
