DETROIT (WJBK) - This weekend marked 50 years since the riots of 1967 in Detroit.
On Sunday, hundreds of people came out to Gordon Park to commemorate the pivotal time in Detroit history.
The side at Rosa Parks and Clairmount is where the five days of unrest began back in 1967.
Along with a dedication for the newly-renovated park, a marker was unveiled in remembrance of the historic site.
U.S. Congressman John Conyers took office two years prior to the summer of 1967, and was in Detroit during the unrest trying to stop the violence. He spoke at the ceremony Sunday.
"Never again," Conyers repeated several times, with the audience echoing his sentiment. "Never again will be caught in a situation where the tensions, emotions are so high."
Mayor Duggan and Police Chief James Craig also spoke at the ceremony.
