Jay Towers checks in with FOX's Bret Baier before debate

Prior to Thursday night's GOP debate at the FOX Theatre, FOX 2's Jay Towers had a chance to speak with moderator Bret Baier.

"This building is spectacular," Baier said of the theater. "It's the perfect place to have a debate - by far, our best venue as far as the visuals."

Baier said he hadn't had a chance to explore the Motor City, but during his stay at the Detroit Marriott, he had a surprise visit.

"There was a bat that flew in last night. I literally was just having a night cap, ready to go to bed, and then this bat flew in," he said. "I don't know what that tells us about tonight but it should be exciting - bat or no bat."

After Dr. Ben Carson suspended his campaign after unfavorable Super Tuesday results, four presidential hopefuls remain. Baier said with less people in the race, it allows for more in-depth questions.

"It enables us to ask more candidates similar policy questions," he said. "I, ideally, would love to see the headline saying, 'Fiery debate but most substantive.' That's the goal."
