Man dies in crash driving wife in labor to hospital
A Colorado couple were rushing to the hospital to give birth to their third child last week when the man crashed the car, killing him and seriously injuring her.
Tony Schmucker was driving the family's Nissan Pathfinder to a hospital near Fort Collins, Colorado early Wednesday morning when it's believed he had a medical emergency. The car careened off the road and down an embankment. The vehicle rolled and hit a boulder and then a tree before it finally came to a stop.
In the passenger seat were his wife, Jill, and in the back seat were his two sons. With both parents unconscious, Tony's oldest son called 911, according to a GoFundMe page established for the family.
Rescuers arrived and Tony was taken to one hospital while Jill was flown to another. She had an emergency C-section and suffered a broken back. She's expected to survive, as is their third child.
Tony, however, did not. He was pronounced dead at the hospital and The Coloradoan reports that he had a medical emergency that caused the crash. A cause of death has not been determined.
The GoFundMe was started by a coworker of Betsy. All of the money raised will be given to Jill and the children.
