Man found stabbed with zip ties around throat in Romulus park

The body of 21-year-old Brandon Mahon was found by police lying on the ground outside his Ford Focus in Romulus just after 6 a.m. Thursday.

He was found at St. John's Lodge Park near Merriman Road. Police say Mahon had zip ties around his neck and a stab wound near his chest.

The Michigan State Police crime lab processed the scene for evidence. Police tell us they are considering both the possibilities of a murder or a suicide and are confidant the autopsy will contribute critical information.

Police add they're not looking for any suspects right now in the death of Mahon, who lived in Romulus and had graduated from Romulus High School.

Police also believe there is no danger to the public. Anyone who may have seen anything unusual in the area of Beverly Park is asked to call Romulus police at (734) 941-8400.

A family friend told FOX 2 that Brandon would never have done this to himself, someone else must be responsible.

Mahon's family released a statement:

"Early this morning our family was notified of the tragic death of our son.  While the investigation is still ongoing we are cooperating with the Michigan State Police.  We are deeply saddened by the circumstances surrounding his death.

"We are overwhelmed by the out pouring of support by family and friends and will continue to work with Michigan State Police in any way possible.  The days to follow will be very trying and we will lean on our support network to get us through.

"Thanks to all who have reached out to us in our time of need."

Police have not ruled out foul play but are also investigating whether it was a suicide.
