A house explodes sending the homeowner to the hospital - now police are looking into what caused the blast.

"Boom, it just blew everything out of that window," said Larry Carrington. "The shade and that stuff - it blew all that stuff out."

The explosion left shattered glass strewn all over the lawn and plants blown out of their pots.

The Carringtons were at their home on Strathmore Tuesday afternoon when they heard an explosion at the house across the street.

"I heard this big boom," said Linda Carrington. "It was big, it was loud."

Neighbors say at first it was just the loud noise and the broken glass but no flames. Then suddenly, they saw a whole lot of smoke.

Then a man came out of the side door, seemingly in shock and holding his arms - out in front of him.

"That guy came out the side door and he asked if I had any burn cream," Carrington said. "Because his arms were all burned up. His arms were all red from the elbow.

Detroit firefighters say it's not clear just what caused all of this.

"It's all contained in the basement," said Sgt. Paul Attard of the Detroit Fire Department. "Some smoke damage upstairs. We've got everything shut off, the power, water, gas and electric."

Neighbors on this quiet street left wondering just what happened in there - and why.

"This block is really quiet," one neighbor said. "This is the most action we've had in a while."
