Man on bicycle killed in shootout with Wayne State police in Midtown

DETROIT (FOX 2) - Authorities are investigating after a man with a gun on a bicycle was shot and killed by a Wayne State police officer.

The officer was responding to a 911 call of a man on a bike allegedly firing shots near Third and Peterboro streets, outside the Detroit Rescue Mission, around 11:20 p.m. Wednesday. When police got on scene the person who called 911 pointed out the suspect to them.

That's when we're told the suspect started shooting at one of the officers, and he returned fire. The suspect was hit and died at the scene. No one else was hurt. 

"When someone is firing directly at you, you're not going to wait to see if you are struck before you return fire. And just initially, what I've seen, he followed all the correct protocol. It was the right thing for him and others in the area," says Wayne State University police chief Anthony Holt.  

Authorities haven't given the name of the suspect yet but will say that he is a white man in his 30s.

Detroit police are now leading the investigation, and have surveillance video from nearby Project Green Light businesses they'll be looking at.

Meanwhile, the Wayne State officer involved has been placed on administrative duty pending the outcome of the investigation. We're told he's been with the force since 2015.
