Missing sisters found safe, police investigate claims of home mistreatment

DETROIT (WJBK) - Two sisters missing since early Saturday morning have been found safe.

Missing posters were plastered outside Detroit's 12th precinct Thursday just hours before the two, 19-year-old Ashley McFarlin and her sister 15-year-old Skylar Mangum, were found.

The girls, living in Detroit's Palmer Woods neighborhood, were reported missing Saturday morning after their mother, Maria Mangum says Ashley was seen running out of their home on Strathcona around three that morning.

Their parents had been searching, and knocking on doors for days. Police eventually found Ashley early Thursday afternoon. Ashley then led them to Skylar also found inside a home on the city's east side. Both girls were unharmed.

While investigators say there are a lot of details that cannot be disclosed, Detroit police say the girls have now made allegations of mistreatment in their home.

The girls told police they ran away because they were scared and didn't know what else to do.

DPD's child abuse unit has begun investigating along with Child Protective Services and made a visit to the home.

Meanwhile, the girls' parents are refusing to speak with FOX 2 any further.

Mangum, 38, previously told FOX 2 that her daughters, who are home-schooled, are good students, popular gospel singers and rarely get into trouble.

The only dispute the parents said they had  was a 28-year-old man Mangum says Ashley began talking to on Blackpeoplemeet.com.

"The only lead I had to go on was the young man that my daughter was in contact with from January until now," Mangum said. "She refused to let us meet the person because she knew we wouldn't approve."

Mangum said her daughters were seen getting into a car idling down the block, then finding Ashley's long braids cut off in a plastic bag in the house.

As the investigation continues, the girls were temporarily removed until that it is complete.
