A mom is hit by a truck and killed as she was walking with her son in Van Buren Township.

The 57-year-old woman was walking along the I-94 service drive with her 25-year-old son Tuesday when she was hit by a truck just before 1:00 p.m.

"For all parties involved, this is a very tragic scene," Van Buren Twp Fire Chief Daniel Besson said.

Police say the truck driver, a 48-year-old man, immediately stopped and called an ambulance. SkyFox flew over the scene and spotted the truck - a Dudek Heating and Cooling vehicle. Police say that driver is physically okay, but shaken up.

"He's being interviewed by the police department. I'm sure as you imagine he's distraught by what took place," Besson said.

According to police, the woman and son live in the area and are frequently walking together.

"I've been in this town all my life so for over 40 years, and I know that I've seen them walking for a long time. They walk to the store and back. It's not uncommon for the people who are from the area to see those two walking."

Van Buren fire, police and a medical examiner spent hours on the scene. Police say the investigation is just beginning and right now, they don't know if the woman stepped into the street, or if the truck veered off of the road.

The only witness besides the driver is the woman's son who is believed to be mentally challenged. So they're asking anyone who was on I-94 at that time and saw what happened, to call police.
